What is Paging?
The
beginning of the paging industry can be traced back to the first land-mobile
radio systems pioneered by the Detroit Police Department , USA as early as 1921.
From being used primarily by government agencies, police departments and the
armed forces, radio transmission technology has advanced to the extent that
multiple transmitter systems using simulant techniques can now broadcast the
same information from multiple transmitters on the same frequency at the same
time. The computer hardware and software used in radio paging systems have also
evolved from simple operator-assisted systems to terminals that are fully
computerized.
With the explosion of wireless technology and dramatic
growth in the Paging Industry, the need for better technology and advanced
systems of communication has increased manifold. Although introduced relatively
late in some Asian countries, paging is growing at an incredible rate as an
alternative to daily communication needs. In keeping with today's specific
needs, a host of useful features have been incorporated in the paging systems
that include a variety of alerting methods (e.g. using vibration, flashing,
lights and different beep tones), group call, which is useful to emergency
rescue, and voice storage which permits review of voice messages at an
appropriate location or time. The introduction of alphanumeric pagers also
enables important information /data to be constantly updated and monitored. In
fact paging systems have undergone a dramatic development, giving the consumer a
wide choice like; non-selective operator assisted voice paging, selective paging
(operator-assisted), automatic paging, tone and numeric display paging,
alphanumeric paging and ideograph display paging (capable of displaying
different ideographic languages, e.g. Chinese and Thai).
